This project posed a big challenge for me. Large amounts of type and brochures are my weak areas. So, I started this project laying out the type in a booklet format, with a headline on the left and body copy on the right. This allowed me to see the copy in a less intimidating fashion. This format created a 16 page brochure. With the company being high end, that make a lot of sense. I decided to go small, minimal, and muted. I used images that emphasize health and a zen-like mind state. The brochure should not make you feel as if you are being bombarded, but as something calming that is easy on you. The chart that needed to be included proved a formidable challenge I am still contemplating where it could go.
For this project I wanted to make the layout incredibly easy to read for any type of reader. Strongly emphasizing the title and making the listing easy to read. My concept was, “An organized drawer.” With the title being the handle to the drawer and the numerical lists as dividers for the body copy.
The best Michael Jackson post ever!
You ain’t never lied! Well you might have but I wasn’t there so…

The reason I chose Gondry for this assignment, other than my obsessive man crush on him (displayed in the attached photo), is his unique style. A lot of effects done in the age of the computer feel like need to be perfect and/or precise. Gondry’s style though goes in the opposite direction, not seeking perfection but a feeling. Which I think he often succeeds at.
His style most closely resembles collage and hand drawn. A lot of his work though is done practically as well. This HP commercial he directed displays all the different styles.
The piece of work I’m going to critique is:
L’Histoire de l’univers
The style of this ad is hand drawn and goes through a sequence of events kicking off with the beggining of the universe leading up to the French event “Forum De Images.”
Images are filled with simple line drawings and hand drawn typography to display grandiose events simplistically. Using imperfect lines and simple shapes and about 5-6 colors, each event is shown on the screen for about 2-5 seconds before transitioning to the next event with unique transitions applied. The sound is just a piano transitioning from foreboding to hopeful and almost childlike. Some interesting sound effects are also applied. They sound like mouth effects. The intent of the piece is show two thing: How important “Forum de Images” is as well as how it came to be in the grand scheme of existence. The meaning of it all is that Forum de Images wants to show its significance on an incredible scale without coming off pretentious or overly serious. The ad is very tongue in cheek, cute, and enjoyable.
Considering that I have taken typography, alot of the websites I viewed provided REview. Except this one. The great thing about this one is that it is the first time I have seen a collection of really great typefaces, their names, and their display. Large majority of these I have never heard. I will definitely be adding some of these to my current collection of typefaces.
Happy/Sad typography project. The concept for this project was to create symbols for happy and sad. I wanted to use the type alone, but felt there was not a strong enough context for them alone so I tied them to graphic images of the sun and a rain cloud. The animation is about a proud son all to happy to spread his rays of happiness. When a Sad Raincloud comes along, he feels the need to show off. The cloud is unimpressed and shows off himself. It turns into a competition until the sun lets out a happy ray a little too strong and catches someone on fire. The cloud puts the fire out. And the person thanks the cloud. The cloud smiles and drifts out. The sun no longer proud lets out one last ray, a small sad.
Fast/Slow: The concept behind this is two fighters entering a ring to engage in combat in an anime esque fashion. Fast is athletic, nible, and, obviously swift. He shows all of these attributes off with back flips and kicks and jumping. Slow enters the frame slowly. Fast patiently waits for slow to enter the arena. When he does, the fight begins. Fast leaps in the air in a swift blur. Then jets directly for Slow. The background turning into a blurring texture as he soars through the air. Slow is surprised by this (you’re fighting someone named “Fast. Duh.) Fast speed increases and the background blurs more. Slow “tries” to scurry but he’s too slow and fatigued. Fast hurdles toward him fast, becoming a blur itself before it burst into a powerful flame. Slow is in trouble. The flame hurdles toward slow but its getting smaller and steadily going slower. It bounces off Slow’s “w” and hits the ground. Slow inches toward the pile of flame and slowly stomps it out. The words Slow Wins, fade in to the screen. The End.
This is a commercial for TUI AG, the biggest travel agency in germany. And what makes this add so great is the use of analogue animation as well as digital. The video is composed entirely of natural shapes to give a hand made feel. Color is used to display changes significant changes in weather. The texture in this piece is paper and it is used to create a sense of handmade slightly imperfectness. Whats really impressive about this video is the scale used. Their is a clearly small space used to create the set, but the use of mountains in the background as well as the silhouetted skyline in the background helps to make the whole scene feel much larger.
